i'm sure none of us were really able to work with our minds straight friday, but i, for sure, had greece on my mind. once five thirty came around, we rushed to the airport to check our bags, grab some food and fly away.
the flight to amsterdam took off at around 8:10p. it was a pretty smooth flight overall; the winos behind me seemed to be having a much better time giggling for 6 hours straight. we were pretty snug in our seats, so sleeping was a little more difficult than anticipated -- but we got there in one piece and got to watch as many movies as we'd like on the way there. we landed in amsterdam at 8a amsterdam time...which was about 3a our time. happy breakfast? not so much. we were all wiped, and just wanted to find a long bench to take a little nap on for our layover.
at around 10a amsterdam time, our KLM plane took off. this time we had a little more wiggle room to relax and get comfortable. we started with a little scare before the flight took off; but the bunch of blonde flight attendants dressed in light blue attended the situation quite well.
compared to the first, this flight seemed to fly by. (pun intended). it didn't take very long for the bunch of us to catch 2 hours worth of sleep, since a lot of us had trouble sleeping the first time around.
the bus ride out of the airport was a whole new adventure in itself. the first bus was so crowded we weren't sure that we could fit the whole party on at once. we opted to wait another 15 minutes for another one, hopefully with more room. that bus came and we were mostly able to find seats, though some of us did have to stand. normally it takes around 45 minutes or so to get to the plaka area of athens. i wouldn't doubt if it took less, the way these greeks drive you'd think they'd be more apt to put seat belts in the public transportation. our bus ride took almost two hours...we found ourselves another incident. of course. as our driver's speeding faster around corners, making us grip to any sort of steady element, we suddenly heard a big bang and saw a bit of sand and dirt smoke up in the air. then there was a car horn that wouldn't seem to stop honking until the bus pulled over and stopped. meanwhile, the majority of the passengers fell out of our seats and flew across to the other side of the bus. the bus driver seemed more irritated than anything, but he's the one that drove right into a car. twenty or so minutes later, another bus came by and we all transported ourselves to the newly crowded bus. welcome to greece!
